Top Trending Bathroom Tiles

bathroom tileIt seems that 2016 has been “the year of the tile” when it comes to bathroom design.

Today’s busy designers are discovering the perfect balance of durability, modern elements and timelessness. From the walls to the floor, tile choices over the last year have helped many homeowners’ make their bathroom truly stand out.

On The Wall and Underfoot

2016 has been all about shape. Geometric tiles have made a comeback, but this time with a modern twist. Dull square tiles were out, while hexagon and round tiles are in. Additionally, subway tiles and thin rectangle tiles also have been popular when arranged in interesting designs, from a simple diagonal placement to herringbone patterns.

The most popular materials underfoot have been glass and ceramic. Why? Partially due to their durability and easy maintenance, and also thanks to the perfect amount of light they bring to a space. Colorful glass accents in borders – or interspersed in a neutral geometric design – for example, have also been used to create a pop of color.

In the Shower

The good ol’ days of the “all-in-one” fiberglass shower surround are thankfully behind us. Tiles are the latest “it” thing for now (but definitely not plain subway tiles or white ceramic).

The same pale neutrals making a show on the floor are continuing up the shower walls. The beautiful textures and natural colors of stone have also been making an elegant appearance in the shower surround.

Known for its beauty and durability, stone has also been a popular choice thanks to its water absorbent nature. However, if you are not sold on stone, ceramic and glass options have also been trendy. Consider small, ceramic tiles in unique shapes. Try a bold color, like black or dark gray, combined with white grout for geometric beauty. Or, for a more classic look, neutral tiles with glass trim and accents can provide timeless beauty.

Backsplash

The backsplash behind your vanity is a chance to make a statement in your bathroom. Tile mosaics have been making a big comeback this past year, whether it’s a simple color pattern or an entire design made from glass.

Mirrored tiles have also been used in 2016 to add light and a feeling of spaciousness to the bathroom. Or, to tie in the look behind the sink to that in the shower, designers in 2016 have been repeating tile choices, or using the same shape or geometric installation pattern.
