Tips for Selecting Your Exterior Paint Colors

color paletteFor some people, choosing exterior paint colors is literally the biggest (square-foot-wise) design decision they will ever make as a homeowner.

Unlike interior colors, exterior tones can impact an entire street — placing a lot of pressure on homeowners when it comes to choosing the right color palette.

Here are some tips to help you choose a color scheme that works both for your style and for your home’s surroundings:

  • The landscape: Look around your entire property. The colors of your surrounding environment, the plants and terrain, the desert or mountains, should complement the exterior paint colors you choose.
  • Other house components: The biggest mistake homeowners make when choosing exterior paint colors is not considering the existing building materials. For example, the roof, trim, brick and stone all have colors that should be part of the overall color scheme. While some brick or stone is tannish-brown; others are reddish rust. Coordinate exterior paint so it has the same undertones as these materials. Also, plan around the elements that are hardest to change. Unless you’re doing a complete renovation, surfaces such as roof shingles or tiles, stonework, sidewalks and driveways will remain in place. Take these into consideration as you select exterior colors.
  • The trends: Thankfully, trends in exterior colors don’t change nearly as much as interior colors. This is a good thing because no one wants to repaint his or her home’s exterior too often. With that said, many of today’s homeowners are leaning toward warmer grays and beiges, as well as darker colors. They are also getting bold with their front doors, choosing colors like red or bright turquise that gives a preview of the home’s inside colors.
  • Consider your home’s architectural style and era. Whether you have a a ranch-style home, a Queen Anne Victorian or a Craftsman bungalow, your exterior paint scheme should relate to the style. Keep in mind: Many paint manufacturers offer collections of historically accurate colors, which can be a great starting point for your palette.
