Smart Home Renovations

home remodelingAt Republic West Remodeling, we strive to stay relevant, delivering the latest in advanced technologies to our clients. Here are the results to a survey about smart home renovations that we recently discovered:

About half of all homeowners renovating their houses today are incorporating smart features for comfort, convenience, safety and energy, and water-saving, according to the 2016 U.S. Houzz Smart Home Trends Survey.

According to the survey of approximately 1,000 homeowners who are in the midst of, planning or who have recently completed a home renovation project, smart thermostats top the list. Boasting remote sensors, these Wi-Fi enable devices help keep homes comfortable while reducing energy consumption.

The survey also revealed that upgrades for security systems and cameras – as well as safety alarms and detectors for hazards, such as fire and carbon monoxide – are most likely to have smart capabilities. Sensors that detect motion, glass breakage and attempts to open doors also made the list. And finally, popular too, are smart door locks and video doorbells.

Other top smart features were installed to improve entertainment experiences and lighting. About eight percent of upgraded homes feature a smart TV and seven percent include smart speakers or video/music streaming devices. When it comes to lighting, 11 percent of renovated homes include smart indoor lighting and four percent add smart outdoor lighting.

For convenience, survey participants said they want to monitor or control devices with a smartphone, tablet or computer. Approximately one-third of upgraded smart home systems or devices can be controlled via a central hub and one-quarter boast voice-controlled features.

The survey also found that renovated homes are more than twice as likely to include a smart system or device than before the renovation (51 versus 20 percent, respectively).
