Three Mistakes to Avoid in Hiring Remodeling Contractors
Hiring a home remodeling contractor is an important decision, one that can often seem overwhelming. If you haven’t had much experience in hiring a contractor in the past, the prospect of trying to pick the right one can be intimidating. There is a lot of pressure to make the right decision, as you will be entrusting your property and money to this person or company.
There are a few basic tactics that can go a long way in helping you weed out the contractors you should avoid. Here are some common pitfalls to consider:
Falling for a convincing line or smooth personality. It is easy to be lured in by a smooth sales pitch or lofty promises. The goal here is usually to keep you mesmerized while you hand over your money—keeping you too distracted to notice that the contractor quickly disappears or fails to deliver what they promise. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
Not doing your research. No matter how reliable a contractor may seem, you cannot go by their assurances and claims alone. Check around and verify everything they tell you. Also, ask your friends and neighbors for any feedback about the company.
Giving in to time pressure. A common tactic among scammers is to claim that you need to seize the opportunity immediately to take advantage of an opening in their schedule or a surplus of materials they just happen to have available. Anyone who strongly pressures you to hand over money right now is likely trying to take advantage of you. A reputable contractor will want you to take as much time as you need to consider your plan and be totally comfortable with all decisions.
