Winterizing: A Smart Idea in All Regions

When people hear the term “winterizing,” they often think of home improvement tactics that only apply to people who live in colder regions. And while it’s true that those of us who enjoy the great year-round weather of warmer regions like here in Arizona don’t really need to worry about preparing for frigid winter weather, this is still a great time to think about home improvements with energy efficiency in mind.

No matter where you live, most of us want to save money on utility bills and help the environment at the same time. “Winterizing” essentially refers to the idea of spending time in summer or fall to prepare your home to stay as comfortable and energy efficient as possible during the rest of the year, regardless of the weather.

While those in colder climates are focused on keeping the heat in, those of us in warmer areas are concerned with keeping the heat out—but the basic idea is the same. You want to keep the elements out and allow your utilities (in this case, mainly air conditioning) to operate as efficiently as possible while maintaining a comfortable environment inside your home.

By doing a thorough inspection of your home, you can spot areas where that precious (and not inexpensive) air conditioning may be exiting your home. (In other words, where your utility costs may literally be going right out the window.) Your home improvement contractor can help with this, and can also recommend ways to make your home more energy efficient.  Options may include upgrading to better windows or roofing materials or sealing any gaps or spaces where air can escape.

This is also a great way to identify any areas in/around your home that may be vulnerable to the elements or wind/water damage in case of severe weather.
