Home Steam Room Benefits and Tips

Steam RoomSteam rooms have been a popular form of relaxation since the days of old, especially in ancient Rome. However, today, you don’t need to wear a toga to experience and enjoy this form of relaxation and healing.

You may not realize it, but steam rooms can actually be affordable and constructed virtually anywhere. You can even buy a portable unit if you don’t want to dedicate an entire room in your home for one.

Steam Room Benefits

Nowadays, stress and anxiety are practically as common as the standard cold. While there are many ways to relax, a steam room can provide a quick way to escape the rigors of daily life and to re-energize. Apart from the mental benefits, spending time in the steam can reduce the amount of toxins in a person’s body by nearly 30 percent, which also makes it a highly effective detox solution.

Additionally, the high moisture and heat can improve blood circulation, relieve sinus congestion and boost the immune system. Steam has also been shown ease muscle and joint pain, and even clear up skin problems.

Tips to Consider

With all the advances in technology, you can now reap the benefits of steam from the comfort of your own home. Steam rooms or steam showers have become increasingly cost-effective, and are stacked with numerous features and multiple benefits.

Here are nine tips to consider:

  1. When installing a steam shower, ensure that the shower will be enclosed and insulated, and constructed of tile, marble or other non-porous material. Also, be sure it’s equipped with a water-tight shower door and floor drain to prevent leaks and flooding.
  2. An ideal steam shower should have a maximum ceiling height of eight feet. Remember, if you plan a taller space, you may need a higher-rated steam generator.
  3. Standard electric power is required to operate the generator. Specify 208v. or 240v. All in-shower controls operate on low voltage. Also, consider where you will install the steam shower generator. Some may be installed in a closet, vanity or heated attic or basement, up to 60 feet away from the steam room.
  4. Seating should be slightly sloped and built-in for ultimate comfort.
  5. Add anti-skid strips on the steam room floor to prevent slipping.
  6. Keep in mind: the steam head should be located approximately six to 12 inches above the floor on a wall opposite the seating area, away from the entrance/exit area.
  7. The ideal location of the in-shower control is inside the steam room four or five feet above the floor.
  8. Required plumbing connections should include a water line to the generator, a steam line from the generator to the steam room and a drain line.
  9. No heating, venting or a/c devices should be installed inside the steam room.
