Configuring Your New Kitchen

Configuring Your New KitchenThe kitchen is often regarded as the ‘heart’ of a home. It serves as the gathering place for the entire family. More than a place to simply cook meals, the kitchen is also a place where family schedules are juggled; where guests get together to catch up; or, even where homework is completed.

All of these scenarios are why the design process is a crucial step when building a new home or during kitchen remodeling in Scottsdale.

Consider integrating these three tips when planning your new kitchen for a space that is practical and easy to work and live in:

  • Keep flow in mind. Aim to create enough room to accommodate at least one or two cooks. Pathways throughout a kitchen should be at least 36 inches wide. According to design experts, the cooking zone should have a path area of 42 inches wide for a one-cook kitchen and 48 inches wide for a two-cook configuration.
  • There’s never enough space. When designing a kitchen, you should allow for as much storage space as possible. One of the biggest mistakes often made is underestimating the amount of storage you will need. Be sure to use every possible nook and cranny to your advantage. Here are some suggestions: extend the overhead cabinets right up to the ceiling; consider deep drawers for easier storage and access to pots and pans; and, allow ample storage for appliances so they don’t clutter up countertops.
  • Lighting is everything. Adequate lighting in kitchens is important in order to create an open, sunny area to prepare meals. In some cases, the position of the kitchen lighting can cast shadows on the workspace making it difficult to see properly. One solution: Install lights designed specifically for under the cabinets – they shine directly onto your countertops and brighten the workspace. In addition to overhead lights, you may also want to include a bay window to allow natural light to enter your kitchen.

By following these three tips, you can have a functional kitchen that complements your home. Republic West Remodeling can guide you through your kitchen remodeling in Scottsdale to ensure your kitchen is all you envision, and will indeed be the “heart” of your home.
